Do I need a Physiotherapist? How can they help me?

Have you wondered what a Physiotherapist actually does and how they can help your body? Many of us have health care funds that provide coverage for Physiotherapy although often don’t use it unless an injury occurs and you feel your body is in pain. However, did you know that Physiotherapist can also help you even when you aren’t in pain?

Physiotherapy I think can better be explained by our American collogues who call it ‘Physical Therapy’. A form of therapy that uses physical mechanics to help aid your body’s function. Here at our Inspire Physiotherapy clinic in Dee Why, we are musculoskeletal Physiotherapists. That means we treat the muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones of your body. Our clinic is a ‘hands on clinic’ in which we apply release work to your musculoskeletal system. This is usually what people think of in terms of ‘having a massage’ when you come for your physiotherapy session. This form of hands-on therapy helps in releasing deep tissue triggers in your muscles and mobilise stiffened joints.

Physiotherapists can also help in other physical ways. If you are planning to start a new sport or return to an old activity, Physiotherapists can screen your body for injury prevention and diagnose any muscles that may be weak or tight. Screening for injuries can help your body’s overall function and ensure you can perform at your best. Muscles imbalances, poor postural position and joint stiffness can all cause your body to be more prone to injuries.

Physiotherapists are experts in body mechanics. Advice on the right mobility movements (stretches) or exercises for strength and stability can all be guided by a Physiotherapist. Finding out what the best exercises and stretches for your body are, can help you function at your full capacity.

Physiotherapist are also trained in movement assessment and ergonomics. See our previous blogs on running biomechanics, dance assessment, work desk set up and postural loading.

You don’t need to have an injury to see a Physiotherapist.  Understanding how you body moves and functions can help you self manage and take care of your body’s needs. If you haven’t come to a physiotherapist session this year, we would love to meet you and help your body function at its best.
